Mud Crab Parasite: Loxothylacus panopaei
Role: Donating specimens
Carter Stancil is a PhD candidate in the Biology (IDPBBC) program at East Carolina University, working with Dr. April Blakeslee and Dr. Michael Brewer to investigate the cold temperature tolerance of two introduced populations of a mud crab parasite, Loxothylacus panopaei, with different coevolutionary histories with their hosts. She came to the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) to collect mud crab specimens with and without the parasite from oyster reefs near the marine center across southern Louisiana. This is just one example of the myriad of ways research at LUMCON contributes to a variety of projects and perspectives helping us further understand coastal ecology.
